CANTON, NY (March 29, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team picked up its first Liberty League win on Saturday at Newell Field House with a 5-4 thriller at St. Lawrence University.

Sophomore Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) got her second match-clinching win this season at No. 6 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Hallie Young, closing out the five and a half hour match. Van Noy was up 4-3 in the first set and then put away the win, with the second set nearly mimicking the first.

"I'm very proud of the team for their determination and being able to finish up until the end," said head coach Kathy Campbell.

Along with Van Noy's singles win, her doubles partner, senior Lindsay Kantor (West Hampton Beach, NY/West Hampton Beach) at No. 3 teamed up for the Brewers' second match point during the early doubles play with a close, 9-8 (8-6) defeat of Samantha Miller and Hallie. Kantor also went perfect on the day with the No. 4 singles win 6-2, 6-4 over Georgia Comber.

"Lindsay played amazing tennis and she's reall on a roll," said Campbell. "She has been playing smart tennis with strong offense especially in singles action. Out doubles pairs played really well and we had a lot of momentum carrying us through those matches and into singles by setting our partners up to capture the point at the net."

The No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) and freshman Emily Hallewell (Stone Ridge School Sacred Heart) helped Vassar tie the match 1-1 with the toppling of Anna Young and Comber. Both later fell in singles at No. 3 and No. 2, respectively, with the closer of the two being Hallewell's 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 loss to Olivia Arroyo.

Junior Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) got Vassar's fourth point of the match when she bested Elkie Vandenbeemt 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot in singles play.

The Brewers' Liberty League weekend is not over until Sunday, March 30 at Rochester Institute of Technology for a 10:00 am start.
