ORANGE, CA (March 15, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team ended its California spring break trip with a 6-3 win over Chapman University on Saturday afternoon at the Anaheim Hills Racquet Club, capping the trip with a two-match win streak.
The Brewers (4-3) got off to an early 2-1 lead following doubles. Vassar won matches at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore
Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) and freshman
Emily Hallewell (Washington, DC/Stone Ridge School Sacred Heart) got the 8-6 win over Sophia Duong and Maddie Saunders while sophomores
Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and
Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) got the No. 3 8-2 victory over Madison Mathis and Monica Spacciapolli.
"I'm so proud of our team for playing with such heart and discipline against a strong Chapman team in Vassar's fifth match in seven days," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "We played with positive intensity and great team spirit."
Stauffer also picked up the No. 5 singles win 6-4, 6-3 over Anna Nelson. Hallewell was also a double-winner with the 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 No. 2 victory against Rachel Fox.
Junior
Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) defeated Andrea Hammer with the 6-1, 6-1 No. 1 solos win. "Sam played one of the very best singles matches of her career," said Campbell. "She played aggressively and consistently the entire match against a strong, ranked opponent. Her first serve percentage was very high and she returned extremely well."
Senior
Lindsay Kantor (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) earned a tough, three-set No. 4 singles besting of Saunders, rounding out the Brewer scoring on the day with the 7-6(6), 6-7(4), 6-2 score. Her first set tiebreaker featured a score in favor of Saunders, 4-0 but Kantor came back and took the set with the 8-6 extra play score. She was also the clinching, fifth point in a match that by itself, lasted almost three hours.
The Brewers will next travel to Canton, NY for Liberty League play against the Saints of St. Lawrence University on Saturday, March 29 at 11:00 am.
