IRVINE, CA (March 11, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team fell to nationally-ranked #7 and Northeast-regionally #10 Bowdoin College 7-2 on Tuesday morning at University High School in Southern California.

The Brewers got off to a promising start with a 2-1 doubles score. The duo of junior Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) and freshman Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) at No. 1 and the pair of sophomores Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) at No. 3 both won their matches with scores of 8-6.

The No. 1 pair defeated Emma Chow and Joulia Likhanskaia while No. 3's topped Kyra Silitch and Tiffany Cheng. Both doubles teams were down 3-0 to start those matches but momentum swung in their favor as the two teams combined for 16 straight game points.

"The team displayed composure and consistent, yet aggressive tennis today in the doubles matches. The third doubles pair set each other up so well. Lauren [Stauffer] was poaching a lot and put so many volleys away while Kelsey served for the match at 7-6 and displayed tremendous composure," head coach Kathy Campbell said. "At first doubles Sam [Schapiro] and Shayna [Becker] were very consistent with serves and aggressive returns as well as awesome lobs over the aggressive Bowdoin pair."

On the singles side of play, the Polar Bears held all of the momentum especially in the second sets. Three scores of 6-0 were posted in the second rounds of action at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. No player on either side of the net could hold an opponent to a scoreless first set.

The closest match of the Brewers' lineup was played by No. 5 Stauffer. She was defeated by Pilar Giffenig 6-1, 7-6(4). Schapiro also fought a tough match with mirroring 3-6 sets in her loss to Kate Winingham at No. 1.

The Brewers will next face nationally-ranked #10 Pomona College on Wednesday, March 12 at 4:00 pm Pacific Time.
