SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (March 1, 2014) – The Vassar College women's tennis team dropped their first Liberty League match of the season to rival Skidmore College 7-2 on Saturday evening at the Wilton YMCA.

Sophomore Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and freshman Shayna Becker (Murrieta, CA/University) were the two Brewers (1-1, 0-1 Liberty League) who earned wins during the delayed match. Stauffer defeated Robyn Baird 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and then Becker took down Caroline Hobbs 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5.

"Lauren played the best singles match in her Vassar career. She attacked with precision and poise," said head coach Kathy Campbell. "Shayna played aggressively for her entire match, winning in two decisive sets against an opponent that she beat in the fall in three long sets."

The Thoroughbreds (5-0, 3-0 Liberty League) got off to an early 3-0 lead after doubles, but the Brewers did not hand those points over easily. Junior Samantha Schapiro (Milford, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory School) teamed with Becker at No. 1 doubles and loss to Lee Ford and Maddie Benn 8-4. The No. 2 team of Stauffer and sophomore Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) were upended by Rachel Plevinsky and Alex Smith in a long, 9-8(5) match.

"The entire team fought so hard, and especially in all the doubles, played disciplined, aggressive tennis.  I am proud of the determination, fight and focus displayed in today's match," head coach Campbell said. "We are really excited about our progress this spring and look forward to what we can continue to accomplish the rest of this season."

Sophomore Winnie Yeates (New Orleans, LA/Isidore Newman School) and senior Lindsay Kantor (Westhampton Beach, NY/Westhampton Beach) also lost a close 9-7 dual with Zoe Vallela and Melissa Hirsch at No. 3.

The Brewers will next board a plane to California where they begin their spring break trip against Principia College on Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 pm in Irvine, CA. They will also face Bowdoin College, Pomona College, California Institute of Technology and Chapman University before returning for a March 29 away match against St. Lawrence University.
