Box ScorePOUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 5, 2014) – The Vassar College men's squash team fell to 1-6 on the season Friday night, dropping a 8-1 match to No. 34 Tufts University in non-conference action from Kenyon Hall.
Vassar College was playing a team ranked 23 spots higher than it was in the CollegeSquashAssociation.com men's team rankings, but was able to start the match off up 1-0 as it earned a default win by
Manav Dalmiya (Ridgewood, NJ/John Dewey Academy). The Jumbos (2-4) quickly made up the difference, earning wins in No. 3, No. 6 and No. 8 to take a 3-1 edge.
Possibly the most exciting match of the day came during the second set of matches, as senior captain
Ryan Kurtzman (Chicago, IL/Latin School of Chicago) played some inspired squash at No. 5. The senior fell in the first set 11-9, setting up a marathon second game, which Kurtzman nearly won but fell 17-15. He again was in the set in the third game, but John Patrick outlasted the senior 11-8 to earn the win.
Brewer No. 1 player
Vincent Mencotti (Birmingham, MI/Brother Rice) got down early in his match, falling 11-7 and 11-5 in the first two sets. Mencotti found his rhythm and earned an 11-5 win in the third set to send the match to a fourth game. Mencotti was able to lead throughout that set, but the Jumbos' Braden Chiulli came back and earned an 11-9 win in the final game.
Vassar College returns to the courts Saturday, traveling to Fordham University at noon in more non-conference action.
