Women's Tennis Heads To The Finals With 5-1 Win Over St. Lawrence

ROCHESTER, NY (May 4, 2013) - Despite the 5-1 win over #3 St. Lawrence in the semifinals of the Liberty League Championship, the Vassar College women's tennis team had their work cut out for them with five extremely close matches Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Ava Sadeghi went into a third set match in singles against Elkie Vandenbeemt. She pulled out the match-winning point with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 win over the No. 1 singles player for the Saints.

The Brewers will face #1 Skidmore College tomorrow morning at 10:00 am.

Sadeghi earlier picked up a close doubles win with fellow sophomore Sam Schapiro. They defeated Vandenbeemt and Shannon Murphy, 9-7 after going on a seven-game run while being down, 7-2. Freshmen Winnie Yeates and Lauren Stauffer defeated Morgan McNeal and Elizabeth Geer (8-2) while junior Lindsay Kantor and freshman Kelsey Van Noy finished the doubles sweep over Olivia Arroyo and Samantha Miller (8-4).

Van Noy earned the fourth point for the Brewers over Laura Goldhar at the No. 6 singles spot. She won, 6-4, 6-0. Along with Sadeghi's three-set match, Schapiro and Yeates were in their third sets of singles when the Brewers' fifth point was scored. Stauffer was in a close, 3-3 second set when the match was over.
