POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 6, 2012) -- The Skidmore College women's tennis team defeated Vassar College 5-2 to win its second consecutive Liberty League Championship on Sunday at Josselyn Tennis Courts.

The Thoroughbreds went ahead 2-1 with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles and then closed out the match with three singles points. At No. 1 singles, Skidmore's Nataly Mendoza and Lee Ford knocked off Ava Sadeghi and Joy Backer 8-2. Robyn Baird and and Alex Smith picked up Skidmore's second doubles point with an 8-3 win over Hannah Van Demark and Lindsay Kantor 8-3. Jennifer Beckerman and Samantha Schapiro kept Vassar in the match with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Yumi Karleshoej and Melissa Hirsch.

With Vassar trailing 2-1, Sadeghi evened the match score at 2-2 with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 Tory Engros win over at No. 2 singles.

Vassar's hopes of a comeback faded significantly as Skidmore earned a pair of wins in quick succession at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to take a 4-2 lead. Mendoza topped Backer 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Ford edged Schapiro 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot.

With three matches remaining, Vassar stayed alive with a lead at No. 1 and an emphatic second set win at the No. 5 spot. However, the Brewers would need all three points and Skidmore's Robyn Baird clinched the Liberty League Championship with a grueling 6-3, 6-1 win over Van Demark at the No. 6 position.

Skidmore won the decision 5-2, leaving two matches with Vassar leads unfinished. Both teams hope to qualify for the NCAA Championships, to be announced this Monday.
