Women's Tennis Into Third Round of NCAAs With 5-0 Win Over No. 26 Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, VA (May 12, 2012) -- The Vassar College women's tennis team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Championships with a 5-0 win over the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) No. 26 University of Mary Washington at the Battleground Athletic Complex. This is the program's second trip to the round of 16, with the first coming in 2003.

The No. 24 Brewers (16-5) face No. 10 Johns Hopkins in the round of 16 on Sunday, May 13, at 2:00 pm. Click the link for live stats. Hopkins had a first round bye and defeated Hunter College 5-0 in the second round.

Vassar swept doubles and clinched the 5-0 win with a pair of singles points. Ava Sadeghi delivered the deciding point for Vassar with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Michelle Meadows at No. 2 singles. After winning the first set 6-0, Jennifer Ruther won by retirement to put Vassar ahead 4-0.

In doubles, Sadeghi and Joy Backer knocked off Meadows and Jocelyn Lewis 8-3 at the No. 1 position. Jennifer Beckerman and Samantha Schapiro topped Lindsay Raulston and Casey Malcolm 8-4 at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3, Hannah Van Demark and Lindsay Kantor cruised 8-3 over Cassie Bowman and Anna Richman.
