POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 24, 2012) -- The Vassar College women's tennis team handed the Northeast No. 17 ranked St. Lawrence University its first loss of the season with a 9-0 sweep on Saturday at Josselyn Tennis Courts.
"We really stepped up our doubles today," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "This was one of our strongest matches this spring throughout the line-up. We played confidently and structured points well."
The ITA No. 26 ranked Brewers (6-3) host Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday, March 25, at 10:00 am.
Vassar went up 3-0 with a sweep of doubles, led by an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles by
Joy Backer and
Ava Sadeghi over Hillary Drewery and Elkie Vandenbeemt, the No. 13 ranked doubles pair in the Northeast Region. "It was a great win for Joy and Ava and they played smart, aggressive doubles," said Campbell.
In singles,
Jennifer Beckerman double-bageled Drewery 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. "This was clearly one of Jen's strongest matches. She attacked the ball confidently with controlled aggression," said Campbell.
