PHILADELPHIA, PA (February 19, 2012) -- The Vassar College men's squash team took seventh place in the College Squash Association Team Championships Chaffee Cup (E Division) with a thrilling 7-2 win over University of Washington.
The match was far closer than the score indicates as five matches went five games, three matches were decided in four games, and one match was over in straights.
The Brewers finish the season with a 10-15 record, more wins than the previous two seasons combined, and the most wins since the 2005-06 season when the team went 8-8. Vassar will next compete in the CSA Individual Championships on March 2-4.
At the No. 1 position, Vassar freshman
Michael Sankovich handled his business with a 12-10,11-2,11-7 win over Johann Huang, capping a 3-0 run in the CSA Team Championships.
Junior
Jake Harris also wrapped up a 3-0 campaign at the CSA Team Championships with a 12-10,11-7,9-11,11-9 win over Jack Burgess.
At No. 3, senior
Max Middleton went down 11-7, 12-10 to Eugene Chau but climbed out of the two-set hole with 11-7,11-9,11-6 wins in the next three sets for a five-game comeback win. Classmate Will English found himself in similar trouble, down 11-7, 14-12 to Parisa Khalighi at No. 4, but roared back 11-7,11-6,11-6 in the next three for a convincing comeback.
At No. 8, Vassar's
Yi Tan evened the score at 1-1 against Jacob Lupu with a 12-10 win in the second game after an 11-4 loss in the first. Lupa went up 2-1 with an 11-5 win in the third but Tan clawed back with a 13-11 win in the fourth. In the decisive fifth game, Tan outlasted Lupa with a spectacular 14-12 win.
