POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 6, 2012) – Playing its finest game of the season against a formidable opponent, the Vassar College field hockey team got two goals from senior Rebecca Smith to knock off Kean University, 3-1, under gray skies at Weinberg Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Brewers, who lost to Kean 4-1 last season, avenged the defeat by playing a tenacious game at both ends of the field. A stifling defense was anchored by junior goalie Maggie Brelis, who made six saves and was a strong presence in the crease. The Brewers also defended against a 15-4 deficit in penalty corners.

The victory improves Vassar to 7-4, while Kean drops to 5-8. The Brewers will next travel to SUNY New Paltz for a 4 pm game on October 12. Kean next hosts Mercy College on October 9 at 7:30 pm.

Junior Tina Caso got Vassar on the board first with her fourth goal of the season just five minutes into the contest. Her tipped in goal came from 11 feet out after an initial a save by Kean goalie Katie DiCarlo.

Smith upped Vassar's lead to 2-0 at the 19 minute mark off a beautiful crossing pass in front of the Kean goal by freshman Bianca Zarrella.

Kean, which held a narrow 17-14 advantage in shots, brought the game to 2-1 three minutes before halftime when Laura Cheatham scored her fifth goal of the season. Her shot bounded into the far left corner of the goal.

Smith scored her second goal of the game and gave Vassar a 3-1 cushion at the 52 minute mark. Her team-leading fifth goal of the season came off a smooth breakaway and her shot beat the Kean goalie on the lower right corner.

DiCarlo made nine saves in goal for Kean.
