Field Hockey Dominant in 6-0 Victory Over Elms College

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 3, 2012) – The Vassar College women's field hockey team tallied six goals on 15 shots to defeat  Elms College, 6-0, on a misty Wednesday evening at Weinberg Field. The Brewers allowed only three shots from Elms in the victory.

Vassar dominated the game right from the starting whistle, and tallied five goals on 13 shots in the first half while allowing no shots from Elms College. The Brewers, now 6-4, will face Kean University at home on Saturday, October 6 at 1:00 pm. Elms College, now 2-8, will face Wheelock College at home on Saturday, October 6 at 1:00 pm.

Vassar opened scoring in the ninth minute when junior midfielder Anna Schroeder played a hard pass past the defense to junior midfielder Elizabeth Raskopf, who tipped the ball into the back of the net.

Schroeder added a goal of her own in the 16th minute, when she made a strong run into the penalty area and sent a hard shot from eight yards out into the right side of the net.

The Brewers added a third goal to their tally in the 24th minute, when freshman midfielder Hayley Merritt sent a pass across the area to Schroeder, who hit a hard low shot into the back right side of the net.

Vassar's next two goals both came in the 30th minute. Freshman midfielder Lauren Wiebe tapped the first one in when freshman forward Bianca Zarrella's shot was deflected skywards. The second came when senior midfielder Rebecca Smith drove into the penalty area and hooked the ball into the left side of the goal to put the Brewers up 5-0 at halftime.

The Brewers continued their scoring run into the second half, and struck again in the 48th minute when junior midfielder Cameron Felt received a cross from Smith and hit a low shot into the back right side of the net to put the Brewers up 6-0.

Junior goalkeeper Maggie Brelis had no saves in the victory, while Blazers goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita had three saves in the loss.
