GENEVA, NY (May 8, 2011) -- The Vassar College women's tennis team's run of eight straight Liberty League Championships ended with a 6-3 loss to rival Skidmore in the Liberty League final on Sunday. The Thoroughbreds won two of three doubles points and four of six singles points en route to their program's first Liberty League Championship.
"I was super proud of the way the team battled and left everything on the court," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "Every match was tightly contested."
The ITA No. 25 nationally ranked Brewers (14-7) and No. 29 Thoroughbreds (10-8) await NCAA Championship bids.
Vassar's only doubles point came at the No. 1 spot as
Joy Backer and
Nicole Block knocked off the regionally ranked team of Rachel Loeb and Nataly Mendoza 8-2. "Joy and Nicole played their best match ever together," said Campbell. "They set eachother up and really dominated a regionally ranked team."
Backer continued her solid play at No. 2 singles and dismantled Melissa Hirsch 7-6, 6-0. "Joy used her speed and kept the ball deep with good variety," said Campbell.
Jennifer Ruther picked up Vassar's final point with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Tory Engros at No. 4 singles. "She played very composed and steady tennis," said Campbell.
