Women's Tennis Sweeps Bryn Mawr and Smith In Seven Sisters

WELLESLEY, MA (April 9, 2011) -- The Vassar College women's tennis team swept Bryn Mawr College and Smith College 5-0 in its first two matches of the Seven Sisters Championships on Saturday.

Host Wellesley College and Vassar College each went 2-0 to lead the field on day one of the 2011 Seven Sisters Tennis Championship. Both the Blue and the Brewers racked up 10 points tie for first place going into day two of the tournament. Mount Holyoke sits in third place with five points, while Bryn Mawr and Smith were held scoreless.

The No. 19 ranked Brewers wrap up the tournament on Sunday against Mount Holyoke at 12:00 p.m. and host Wellesley at 3:00 p.m. The Seven Sisters tournament uses a format of two doubles and three singles matches from a lineup of seven players with no repeated players.

The Brewers opened the tournament with a 5-0 sweep of Bryn Mawr. At No. 1 doubles, junior Nicole Block and senior Alyssa Roush cruised 6-1, 6-1 over Caitlin Finn and Marianne Leung. Sophomore Natalie Santiago and freshman Lindsay Kantor rolled 6-2, 6-1 over Vivian Chen and Elizabeth Olecki at No. 2 doubles.

Vassar dropped a total of two games en route to a sweep of the three singles positions. Junior Jennifer Beckerman blanked Eliza Perocchi 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and sophomore Jennifer Ruther double-bageled Zoe Odenwalder 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Junior Joy Backer routined Jenny Vogel 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

In the second match, Vassar lost only two total games in the 5-0 sweep of Smith.
