Women's Tennis Upset By No. 27 MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA (April 16, 2011) – Up against a hot MIT team, the ITA No. 22 ranked Vassar College women's tennis team suffered an 8-1 loss as MIT backed up their recent national ranking. The Engineers were recently ranked 27th in the country and 9th in the New England Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and have now notched their seventh straight victory, upsetting 22nd ranked Vassar College. It was the first win for MIT over the Brewers since 2003.

Vassar falls to 13-5 on the season and will travel to Hamilton College to play against Bowdoin on April 24th. The Engineers remain undefeated this spring season and improve to 12-4 on the season. They will host Skidmore College on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM. 

MIT took two of the three doubles matches, with the pairs of Candace Wu and Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu and Bianca Dumitrascu each winning 8-2. Natalie Santiago and Lindsay Kantor captured Vassar's only point with an 8-1 over Katie O'Neal and Melissa Diskin at third doubles.

Dumitrascu knocked off Jennifer Ruther 6-1, 7-6 at fourth singles, as all six MIT singles players won in straight sets. Wu and Hsu each posted shutouts in their first set, while only Melissa Diskin and Dumitrascu needed seven games to win sets. O'Neal took out Natalie Santiago  6-4, 6-2 at fifth singles.
