POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 7, 2010) – The No. 22 ranked Vassar College women's tennis team sailed past visiting Hunter College with a dominant 9-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at the Joss Tennis Courts. The consistent Brewers dropped just seven games on the day, four in singles and three in doubles.
Vassar improves to 14-2 on the season with its sixth straight win, and will travel to Skidmore April 11th for a 1:00 p.m. match, the team the Brewers defeated in the 2009 Liberty League Championships en route to their seventh consecutive title. Hunter drops to 13-3 on the year, and will travel to Kings College April 9th for a 3:30 p.m. match.
Vassar head coach
Kathy Campbell was satisfied with her team's effort across the board, but particularly praised the play of senior
Nicole Pontee at No. 1 singles.
“Nicole had a very close match with [opponent Evgeniya Kim] last year, and today she really raised her game,” Campbell said. Pontee needed three sets to defeat Kim last season, but on Wednesday she did so while dropping just three games in two sets for a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Sophomores
Jennifer Beckerman and
Joy Backer and freshmen Natalie Santago and
Jennifer Ruther all swept their singles opponents without dropping a game, as did the pair of Santiago and
Melanie Horn at number three doubles. The most games given up in a set by any Vassar player or doubles team was two.
