LOS ANGELES, CA (March 9, 2010) – Playing on outdoor courts for the first time since the fall, the Vassar College women's tennis team breezed by Occidental College in the Brewers' first match of a five-stop trip to California over Spring Break.
With their third consecutive win of the spring, the Brewers improve to 6-1 in dual matches this season.
“This was a nice start to the trip and a was a great transition to outdoor play,” said head coach
Kathy Campbell. “We had really strong play in the lineup from top to bottom, including exhibition play.”
Vassar got quick 8-1 and 8-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles respectively, while the doubles team of sophomores
Jennifer Beckerman and Joy Block had the closest win at No. 2, 8-6.
In singles play, the Brewers won every match in two sets with the exception of the No. 1 set. In that match, senior
Nicole Pontee easily won the first set, 6-2, and although Occidental's Krishnaveni Subbiah took the second set, 6-1, Pontee convincingly won the match with a 6-0 sweep in the third set.
In just her second match in the lineup, No. 6 Block had an impressive 6-0, 6-0 sweep, while freshman
Jennifer Ruther dropped just two games in her 6-2, 6-0 win.
