WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. (May 9, 2009) – Narrow victories in three highly contested doubles matches enabled Bowdoin College to earn a 5-0 victory over the Vassar men's tennis team in second round play in the NCAA Tournament held at Williams College Saturday afternoon. The Brewers, ranked No. 11 in the Northeast, were making their second straight NCAA appearance and were pitted against a strong Bowdoin team, ranked No. 4 in the Northeast.
The Brewers conclude the season at 10-9 while Bowdoin improves to 12-6 and advances to the regional final against host and No. 8 Williams College.
The No. 1 doubles match had Vassar's
Michael Mattelson and
Jeremy Rosen pitted against Bowdoin's Oscar Pena and Jamie Neely. In a dramatic opening match, Penn and Neely prevailed in a tiebreak 9-8(2).
The next two doubles matches followed a similar form, with Bowdoin winning at No. 2 doubles 8-5 and a another tight victory at No. 3 doubles, 9-7. The Polar Bears were able to close out the match with victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles.
