FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY (April 5, 2009) -- Thanks to dominant wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles, and a sweep of the singles matches, the Vassar College women's tennis team picked up an 8-1 victory over Hunter College at the USTA National Tennis Center on Sunday. The freshman duo of
Jennifer Beckerman,
pictured above, and
Joy Backer remained impressive for the Brewers, as they picked up convincing wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, and joined for the first time in doubles play to produce an 8-1 win at the No. 2 spot.
The Brewers improve to 12-4 and will next take to the court on Saturday, hosting Skidmore College at 12:00 p.m.
Beckerman earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, while classmate Backer breezed through her No. 3 singles match without dropping a game. The only close decision in singles play was at No. 1 singles as junior
Nicole Pontee earned a 7-5, 2-6, 10-2 super tiebreaker win over Hunter's Evgeniya Kim in the final match of the day. Playing in her inagural non-exhibition singles match, freshman
Nicole Block earned her first career win with a strong 6-1 6-0 victory over Bomi Park at No. 6 singles.
The Hawks picked up their lone win of the day in a tightly contested No. 1 doubles match, as Kim and teammate Monica Calungcagin defeated the Brewer duo of Pontee and senior
Jamison Steele, 9-7.
Backer and Beckerman earned a smooth 8-1 win over Stefaine Smith and Anna Vagner at No. 2 doubles, and the No. 3 team of senior
Alexis Jacobson and Block, another new combination for the Brewers, swept to an 8-0 win over Linda Ravul and Ericka Jaramillo.
