POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 5, 2009) -- With just two matches remaining until the Liberty League Championships, the Vassar men's tennis team is gelling at the right time. Led by convincing victories in doubles and a powerful sweep in singles, the Brewers defeated Liberty League opponent Union College 9-0 at the Joss Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.
Now 8-6 on the season, Vassar will play its final home match of the sesaon against Division I Fordham on Wednesday, April 8 at 4:00 p.m. Union drops to 0-6 on the season and will next face Wheaton College on April 10.
"Across the board, everyone came to play today," said Vassar head coach Ki Kroll. "I was particularly pleased at the way Mike Mattelson bounced back after losing to Drew earlier in the week, to secure wins in both doubles and singles. We looked sharp today. We need this same type of effort against an improved Fordham team on Wednesday. Our match against Tufts this Friday will be a good test heading into the league championships."
At No. 1 singles and doubles, Mattelson didn't drop a game. No. 2 singles player Max Willner was equally as formidable, losing just one game in doubles and two in singles. Sophomore's Greg Katz and Joshua Jasso at No. 3 and No. 4 singles respectively lost eight combined games. Senior Jeremy Rosen, playing No. 6 singles, won convincingly 6-2, 6-1. The Brewers dropped only one set, at No. 5 singles where junior Shane Donahue dropped the first set 6-3, but stormed back to take the second 6-0 and the 10-point super tiebreaker 10-4.
