Strong Team Effort Leads Men's Tennis Past Drew, 8-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 30, 2009) -- The Vassar men's tennis team snapped a three game losing streak and topped the .500 mark with an impressive 8-1 victory over Drew University this afternoon under chilly conditions at the Joss Tennis Center.

The Brewers, now 6-5 in the spring season, remain at home for their next match, facing Liberty League rival on April 5 at 1:00 p.m. Drew falls to 3-4 on the season and next travels to Catholic for a match on April 4.

The Brewers lost one match, coming at the No. 1 singles spot, where Drew's Jeff Marshall earned a 6-4 victory over Vassar's Mike Mattelson. Aside from that glitch, Vassar showed its depth and strength, taking all three doubles matches, two of which came in 8-0 victories. In singles competition, the Brewers didn't lose a set, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-1 victory by sophomore Greg Katz over Victor Kolarov at No. 3 and senior Jeremy Rosen ousting his opponent, Jon Pranksy, 6-1, 6-1. In total, the Brewers dropped just 21 games.

"I liked the way the team bounced back after a tough match against Amherst on Saturday," said head coach Ki Kroll. "Tennis is a game that is played in all conditions and while it was chilly and windy at times, I liked the way the team played the elements."

Kroll added the victory was an important momentum builder for a Liberty League match against Union. "We only have three matches left before the Liberty League Tournament (April 18-19), so it's important that each play is playing his best heading toward our ultimate goal, which is to win the Liberty League," Kroll said.
