POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 7, 2009) – After a long break, the Vassar College men's tennis team had its first test of the spring season against Baruch College at Walker Field House this afternoon, and sailed through with a perfect 9-0 sweep. The Brewers did not drop a single set in all nine contests.
Vassar is now 2-1 and will play Manhattanville at home next Saturday, February 14, at 1:00 pm. Baruch drops to 1-1 and has a long break before their next match, at Alvernia College on March 13.
In singles play, every Brewer won in straight sets. Only
Max Willner (Bronx, NY/The Dwight School) at the number two spot and
Jeremy Rosen (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) at number four saw a real test; each clinched 7-5 sets in their matches. Willner pulled out a 7-5, 6-2 win over Fedor Khrushchev (St. Petersburg, Russia/H.S. #62) and Rosen defeated Emanuel Imperial (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) 6-1, 7-5.
Vassar coach Ki Kroll was especially pleased with his team's play in doubles, which he expects will power the team this season. In total, the Brewers surrendered just three games to Baruch in doubles competition.
