Jain Picks Up Clincher as Men's Squash Opens Season With 5-4 Win over Haverford

Junior Arjun Jain picked up the clinching win in five games at No. 4

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 7, 2009) – Thanks to a clutch five-game win by junior Arjun Jain, the Vassar College men's squash team started the season off on the right foot, edging Haverford College 5-4 at Kenyon Court on Saturday.

The Brewers stand at 1-0 and take to the court again on Wednesday as they host Bard College at 7:00 p.m. The Fords fall to 1-1 and next play Vanderbilt and Southern Carolina at the Navy Round Robin on November 14.

With the Brewers holding a 4-3 match lead, Jain picked up the clinching win at the No. 4 spot in dramatic fashion, with a 3-2 (11-9, 11-8, 10-12, 7-11, 11-6) victory over Alex Spillotes. His win was made even more crucial by the fact that teammate Mehdi Naqvi had just been edged by the narrowest of margins, dropping a 3-2 (8-11, 12-10, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9) match to Zef Konst at the No. 2 spot.

Arjun Jain saved the day, he really sealed the deal for us,” said head coach Jane Parker. “It's so great to get this win today after all the hard work this team has done in the off-season. They are so motivated to turn things around this season.”

Freshman Andrew Lindsay opened his collegiate career for the Brewers with a 3-0 (12-10, 11-2, 11-6) win over Tim Ibbotson-Sindelar at No. 6 while senior co-captain Henk Isom also started his season off with a win, downing No. 3 Matt Liscovitz 3-0 (11-2, 11-8, 11-8).
