Women's Tennis Edged By Wellesley At Seven Sisters

WELLESLEY, MA (March 30, 2008) -- In the final match of the day, Wellesley College edged Vassar College, 3-2, to win its fourth-straight Seven Sisters Tennis Championship on the 25th anniversary of the event.

Vassar took second place with 17 points on the weekend. Smith College, Mount Holyoke College and Bryn Mawr College each finished within a point of eachother, taking third (6 points), fourth (5 points) and fifth (4 points) respectively.

In the deciding Wellesley and Vassar match, Meghan Stubblebine picked up Wellesley's first point with a 6-3, 6-1 win at number two singles over Vassar's Kelly Barnett. Vassar tied it at 1-1 with a win from Nicole Pontee at number one singles, where she took a close match over Jen Schwarzkopf, 6-4, 6-4.

The Blue took a 2-1 lead when the number two doubles pair of Shivani Saxena and Jacqueline Shen defeated Courtney Burks and Jamison Steele by a score of 6-2, 6-3. Wellesley then clinched the title with a win at number one doubles where Jenna Mezin and Hali Walther defeated Vassar's Elysa Kliman and Krista Romita, 6-4, 6-4.

Vassar picked up a point to set the final to 3-2, with a win from Alexis Jacobson who defeated Wellesley's Trish Devine 4-6, 6-1, 10-3. The winners of each flight in the Wellesley/Vassar match-up were named Flight Champions and All-Seven Sisters for their 4-0 records on the weekend.

Earlier in the day, Smith edged Mount Holyoke 3-2, Vassar defeated Bryn Mawr 5-0, Wellesley defeated Smith 5-0 and Mount Holyoke beat Bryn Mawr, 3-2.

It was the 11th overall title for Wellesley, the most in the history of the event. Smith College owns eight titles while Vassar has claimed seven.
