NEW PALTZ, NY (October 8, 2008) – The Vassar women's tennis team breezed to a 9-0 sweep of local rival SUNY-New Paltz in an away match on Wednesday night. The win improves the Brewers to 2-1.
After picking up her first collegiate win at singles last weekend, freshman
Jennifer Beckerman (Santa Barbara, CA/Santa Barbara) notched a dominant victory at No. 3 singles against Lyndsey Lovinger, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Junior
Nicole Pontee (Flossmoor, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor) continued her winning ways with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Dana Lim in No. 1 singles play. Pontee has won six of her seven singles matches this season.
The Brewers rolled through doubles play, with the closest match coming at No. 1 doubles. In that match, Pontee and
Jamison Steele (Newport Beach, CA/Corona del Mar) picked up an 8-4 win.
The closest match of the day was at No. 2 singles, as Stephanie Schara took Brewer
Joy Backer (Del Mar, CA/Torrey Pines) to three sets. Backer hung on for the 6-2, 7-6, (8-6) win.
Vassar returns to action on Sunday, playing at Liberty League opponent Union College.
