After becoming the first player in Vassar College men's tennis history to win a match in the NCAA Division III Singles Championships, a 7-6 (7), 6-4 victory over sophomore Amrik Donkena of Gustavus Adolphus, Mattelson threatened to shock the championships when he won the first set over No. 1 seed Dillon Pottish of Emory, 6-4. Injury forced Mattelson to retire with the match tied one set each, however the Liberty League Player of the Year earned All-America honors for his first round victory.
