Despite the grueling heat at the Capital District Classic, hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, freshman Johanna Spangler won the 5 kilometer event in only her fourth collegiate attempt, with a time of 19:22.48. Spangler led from the gun to the finish, and broke away from the second place finishing with three laps remaining.
