Philosophy Statement

Department of Athletics and Physical Education

Vassar College is committed to providing challenging athletic opportunities through a comprehensive educational program, which will facilitate a positive and healthy life experience.

Philosophy Statements

Vassar College embraces sport as an integral part of its educational mission. As a NCAA Division III institution, we provide an environment for student-athletes to achieve academic and athletic excellence.

We offer a broad-based program for men and women. Every student has the opportunity to participate in one or more athletic activities:

  • An elective physical education program that emphasizes lifetime sports, health and physical fitness.
  • Intramural and life fitness programs that encourage the Vassar community to participate in wide-ranging recreational and lifetime sport activities.
  • Competitive and equitable intercollegiate teams that strive for achievement and excellence with an emphasis on personal development.

We encourage and support the concepts of gender equity and diversity, promote an environment that is free of harassment or intimidation, and embrace the diversity of the Vassar community.

Department members are role models and mentors. As a result, they recognize their responsibility in supporting and promoting the principles of fair play and sportsmanship.

The experience of the student-athlete is of primary importance. The athletic experience itself is intended to foster the learning and growing process that strengthens skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, discipline and confidence.

The athletic experience can play an integral role in the future of the Vassar graduate. The Department encourages a healthy lifestyle through education on such topics as life fitness, drug and alcohol misuse and mental health.

We challenge every community member to excel academically, athletically, personally and professionally.
