Biography
2021-22: As a squad leader, finished his last year going 16-26 in epee… Went 8-5 at the Vassar Invitational, with wins over Yeshiva (2-1), Haverford (1-0), Denison (2-1), and Drew (2-1)… Went 5-2 at the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invite, beating Binghamton (3-0 and 1-0)… Recorded a victory over a Princeton fencer from Team USA at the Sacred Heart Traditional Multi-Meet.
2020-21: Season canceled due to COVID-19 ...
2019-20: Went 21-18 in epee… Recorded a strong 13-7 mark with wins over RPI (3-0), Cornell (2-0), Drew (2-1), Marist (3-0), and Binghamton (2-1)… Was 3-2 against Detroit-Mercy and Cleveland State… Was 3-0 at the Northeast Multi-Meet #3, going 1-0 against Boston University and 2-0 over New Hampshire to close the season.
2018-19: In his first season, went 44-43 in epee… Went 13-8 at the Matt Lampell Invite on Nov. 18… Was 11-7 at the Dec. 1 Drew Invite… Picked up an impressive 3-0 victory over Yale on Feb. 2.
PREVIOUS TO VASSAR: Three-year member of the varsity fencing team at the Blake School... Also a member of the varsity volleyball team... Was seventh in the state in 2017... Second-team relay in 2017.
PERSONAL: Parents are Stephen Smela and Cordelia Pierson... One sibling in Merrick Pierson Smela (21)... Grandmother, Anne Pierson was Vassar class of 1951... Chose Vassar for its strong academics, open curriculum and active fencing program.
