Women's Volleyball Sweeps Rivier in Vassar Quad Opener

Vassar earns first victory of the season in sweep of Raiders

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team opened its action at the two-day Vassar Quad on Friday evening as the Brewers earned its first victory of the season with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-22 sweep of Rivier inside Kenyon Hall. Vassar's record improves to 1-1 on the season while the Raiders drop to 0-3 overall.

First Set
  • Vassar pulled ahead 7-5 in the early stages of the first set following kills from senior Holland Kaplan and first year Gina O'Connell along with an ace from senior T Petro.
  • Rivier battled back to take a 12-11 lead behind two kills from Savannah Dunne and a winner from Brooke Braswell.
  • VC answered to go ahead 17-14 after another Kaplan kill and a block from O'Connell and junior Eleanor Gegen before expanding the lead to 21-15 after an ace from sophomore Amy Melchior and a kill each from Kaplan and Gegen.
  • Vassar used two kills from sophomore Eleanor Feuer and a kill apiece from Gegen and junior Erin Lovett to take the opening set.
Second Set
  • The Brewers raced out to a 6-1 lead in the second stanza as Gegen buried two kills along with a winner from Feuer.
  • Rivier drew within 10-9 on back-to-back aces from Mia Pento but the Brewers built the lead to 13-9 on a Gegen winner.
  • The Raiders got back within a point on a block from Dunne and Braswell but VC collected five straight points, led by two Kaplan kills, a block from O'Connell and Lovett and a Petro ace, to expand the lead to 21-14.
  • Vassar coasted to a 25-17 set victory following three O'Connell winners and one more kill from Kaplan.
Third Set
  • Both teams traded points in the beginning of the third set as consecutive aces from Sam Driend put Rivier ahead 9-8.
  • Vassar pulled back ahead by a point at 11-10 on an ace from senior Francesca Medrano until Rivier climbed back to take a 18-15 lead.
  • Vassar evened the set at 19 on a block from Gegen and Feuer and then used a four-point run behind a kill each from Kaplan and Feuer to go ahead 23-20.
  • Driend's winner closed the gap to 23-22 but back-to-back Kaplan kills completed the sweep for the Brewers.
For The Brewers
  • Kaplan led the way with 16 kills (.371) and nine digs while Gegen notched nine winners, two blocks and 11 digs.
  • Lovett added seven kills and a block along with Feuer tallying six kills and a block.
  • O'Connell posted five kills and three blocks while Medrano, who eclipsed the 1,000 career assist mark on Tuesday, finished with 33 assists, two kills, 12 digs and two aces.
  • Petro totaled nine digs and two aces while first year Sophia Ierulli lifted eight digs.
For The Raiders
  • Driend registered nine kills, nine digs and two aces while Dunne recorded nine kills, an ace, two blocks and five digs.
  • Ashlee Salafia added nine kills and seven digs while Lily Seibel notched 24 assists, three kills and 10 digs.
  • Ava Pohopek and Braswell each recorded three kills while Pento chipped in two aces and eight digs.

  • Vassar returns to Kenyon Hall for the second day of the Vassar Quad against Clark at 11:00 a.m. followed by West Conn at 3:00 p.m.
  • Rivier takes on West Conn at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
