Vassar Suffers Home Loss To #25 Messiah

Brewers travel to NYU Tuesday night

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team continued its non-conference schedule Saturday afternoon with a tight 1-0 home loss to #25 Messiah. Jacob Raphan (Oceanside, NY) finished the contest with one save for the Brewers.
 
Vassar, who has dropped three of its last four decisions, falls to 2-3-1 overall on the season while the Falcons improve their standing to 4-1-1.
 
How It Happened
  • The only goal of the game came in the 17th minute off the foot of Sam Phillips.
  • Phillips received a pass from Kyle Spodnik inside the box and deposited his second goal of the year at the 16:08 mark of the contest.
  • Vassar managed just two more shots the remainder of the half and did not put one of those attempts on the frame.
  • Messiah finished the first half with a 4-3 advantage in shots.
  • Vassar entered the intermission with a slight 3-2 margin in corner kicks.
  • Messiah goalkeeper, Killian O'Reilly, turned aside one Vassar attempt prior to halftime.
  • Vassar went on to outshoot Messiah 7-4 after the break, but only put one attempt on goal in the second half.
  • O'Reilly turned aside a Jackson Allen (Chapel Hill, NC) shot in the 77th minute for his only stop of the half.
  • Vassar closed the second stanza taking four of the seven corner kicks after halftime.
  • Raphan made his only stop of the game after the break.
 
For The Brewers
  • Raphan surrendered just the only goal and improved his save percentage to .625.
  • Eli Torrey (Philadelphia, PA) led the team with three shots, putting on attempt on goal.
  • Allen and Alejandro Martinez (Lake Mary, FL) each recorded a pair of shots.
 
For The Falcons
  • Phillips scored his second goal and first game winning goal of the season.
  • Spodnik moved into a tie for the team lead in assists with his third helper of the year.
  • Owen Resch led the team with two shots.
  • O'Reilly made two saves and through six starts is working to a .833 save percentage and a 0.50 goals against average.

  • Vassar closed the afternoon with a 10-8 advantage in shots.
