Baseball Falls Late in Series Opener Against Bard

Vassar and Bard will square off in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon in Poughkeepsie

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team opened its three-game Liberty League series with Bard on Friday afternoon as the Brewers dropped a wild 9-8 back-and-forth affair at Honey Field.

Vassar's record falls to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in conference play while the Raptors improve to 8-8 on the season and 2-2 in Liberty League matchups.

How It Happened
  • Bard pushed a run across in the bottom of the first as Lachlan Rudd drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on an error and later scored on a groundout from Angus Lunt-Woodward.
  • Vassar took its first lead in the top of the third following a RBI triple from senior Jensen Bergman that knocked in sophomore Dash Edwards, who reached on a one-out walk, and Bergman was plated on a groundout from first year Ethan Fox-Fernandez to go ahead 2-1.
  • The Brewers tacked on a run in the fourth on a two-out RBI single from Edwards to push first year Nick Kreatsoulas across to expand the lead to 3-1.
  • Bard answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning after Jack Rivlin scored on a wild pitch and Jamie Fryer's sacrifice fly scored Lunt-Woodward to even the game at three.
  • In the top of the sixth, Vassar regained the lead at 4-3 behind a two-out double from Edwards that chased Kreatsoulas home from first.
  • The Raptors pulled back ahead 5-4 in the seventh after Johnny O'Connor scored on a Vassar error and Jack Leandri came across to score on a wild pitch.
  • Vassar responded in the top of the eighth with four runs as Edwards singled home Kreatsoulas, Fox-Fernandez plated two on a triple and then scored on a wild pitch to go ahead 8-5.
  • Bard countered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the eighth, beginning with a RBI single from Xavier Webb, a RBI double from Andrew Plenn and then a groundout from Leandri tied the game at eight.
  • Rivlin's RBI triple with two outs in the eighth gave Bard the final 9-8 score.
For The Brewers
  • Edwards finished 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and three runs batted in while Kreatsoulas tallied two hits and scored three runs.
  • Bergman added a triple, two runs scored and a RBI along with Fox-Fernandez recording a triple, three RBI and a run scored.
  • First year Eric Wallick reached base three times, including a double, and first year Aidan Annello added a hit.
  • Junior Grant Maryott took a no-decision on the mound as he went six innings, allowing two hits, three runs (two earned), three walks and struck out one.
  • Senior Danny Wellner took the loss in relief after allowing three hits and four runs over 0.1 innings.
For The Raptors
  • Rivlin finished 2-for-5 with a triple, a run scored, two stolen bases and a RBI along with Leandri knocking in two runs.
  • Webb, Plenn and Fryer each tallied a hit and a RBI along with O'Connor posting a hit and two runs scored.
  • Charles Lehr started for the Raptors and recieved a no-decision following five innings of work and allowing three hits, three runs (two earned), six walks and struck out three.
  • Graham Williams earned his third win of the season in relief as he went the final 1.1 innings, allowing one hit, one run, one walk and struck out one.
Up Next
  • The two teams will meet tomorrow for a doubleheader to close the three-game series beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Prentiss Field.
