Grantham, PA - The #20 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team continued its month-long road trip on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers fell in straight sets, 19-25, 17-25, 22-25, to #6 Messiah inside Hitchcock Arena.
Vassar's record moves to 9-8 overall while Messiah's record improves to 21-2 on the season.
First Set
- Messiah pulled ahead 6-4 to begin the match following two kills from Alex Kagoro and one winner from Todd Snyder.
- Junior Walter Birnbaum's service ace evened the set at eight as the Brewers took a one-point lead at 14-13 after consecutive kills from sophomore Henry Bonney and junior Armaan Desai.
- The Falcons regained the lead at 17-14 after a kill and an ace from Kagoro along with a winner from Tyler Good and a block from Jake Eby and Good.
- Bonney's kill trimmed the deficit to 18-16 before a four-point run from Messiah, led by two aces and a kill from Tyler McConnell, expanded the advantage to 24-18.
- The Falcons took the opening set after a kill from Kagoro at 25-19.
Second Set
- Kills from Bonney and Birnbaum tied the set at four early before the Falcons built the lead to 9-6 on kills from McConnell and Kagoro and an ace from Sean Gillespie.
- VC battled back to tie the set at 12 on two Birnbaum kills, a winner from Bonney and a solo block from Desai.
- Two more Bonney winners pushed the Brewers ahead 15-14 until Messiah scored the next eight points to go ahead 22-15 on a block from Brandon Sharp and Snyder.
- Messiah closed the second set win with a block from Sharp, Snyder and McConnell along with a McConnell kill.
Third Set
- The Falcons gained a 6-2 lead to start the third set on two kills from McConnell, a winner from Kagoro and a kill and a block from Snyder.
- Vassar got back within one at 11-10 as Bonney led the way with three kills and an ace along with a solo block from Desai.
- A kill from senior James Zuckerman and a block from Desai and sophomore Petar Miocinovic tied the set at 14 all before Messiah pushed the lead to three on a Snyder kill at 17-14.
- Birnbaum and Zuckerman's kills evened the set back at 20 until Messiah posted a 23-21 lead on two more winners from Kagoro.
- Bonney reduced the lead to one at 23-22 on a kill but the Falcons scored the final two points of the set with Kagoro tallying the match-clinching kill.
For The Brewers
- Bonney recorded a team-high 12 kills (.364), 10 digs and an ace while Desai tallied five kills and six blocks (three solo).
- Birnbaum registered six kills, an ace and a block along with Zuckerman posting two kills.
- Junior Parker Schoenl handed 19 assists and senior Casey McMenamin lifted six digs.
For The Falcons
- Kagoro finished with a match-high 18 kills and seven digs along with McConnell garnering 11 kills, two aces, six digs and two blocks.
- Snyder posted eight kills, four blocks and three digs while Eby secured five kills and two blocks.
- Sharp totaled 40 assists, nine digs and two blocks while Good lifted a team-high 10 digs.
Up Next
- Vassar is off until March 18th when the Brewers travel to take on Russell Sage at 6:00 p.m.
- Messiah is also idle until the 18th as the Falcons will host MAC foe King's (PA)
