Brewers Push Season Opening Winning Streak To Five Games

Trio of Brewers record four points; Kaltsas wins 10 draw controls

Bristol, RI – Led by four points from Tess Billings (Deerfield, IL), Elizabeth Burgess (Columbus, OH) and Maddie Kaltsas (Minnetrista, MN), the Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team ran its season opening winning streak to five games Saturday afternoon with a 15-8 road win at Roger Williams.
 
Vassar starts the year 5-0 for the second straight season and wins just the fourth ever all-time meeting with the Hawks. Roger Williams dropped its fifth straight game to start the campaign.
 
How It Happened
  • After surrendering the first goal of the game, Vassar tallied five straight times.
  • The scoring run featured five different goal scorers, including Kaltsas who finished the run at the 6:15 mark of the second period.
  • Vassar allowed just one second quarter goal and got back-to-back goals from Billings heading into halftime to carry a 7-2 lead into the intermission.
  • Vassar closed the opening 30 minutes with an 18-8 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in draw controls.
  • Coming out of halftime, Vassar scored the first three goals of the third frame to open a commanding 10-2 advantage.
  • Billings scored her third straight goal to open the second half scoring and Burgess assisted on two of the three goals in the spurt.
  • The Vassar defense held the Hawks off the board in the second half until the 1:16 mark of the third quarter.
  • The two teams split 10 fourth quarter goals, with Vassar holding a lead of at least seven goals throughout the stanza.
  • Back-to-back goals from Kaltsas and Kate Connelly (Owings Mills, MD) pushed the Brewers in front by a game-high nine goals, at 15-6, with 4:01 left in the contest.

  • Maddie Busam (Summit, NJ) picked up the win in goal on Saturday with four saves for the Brewers.
 
For The Hawks
  • Allie Shamberger paced the Hawks with four goals, two groundballs and a caused turnover.
  • Molly Schmitz scored once and helped on two goals.
  • Miranda Hayes scored once, caused two turnovers, secured three groundballs and led the team with four draw controls.
  • Lauren Canata recorded a team-high four groundballs and won three draws.
  • Aizza Chase suffered the loss in goal with 11 saves.
