#RV Men's Basketball's Winning Streak Stopped Against RPI

Fitzgerald tallies a game-high 25 points in the Brewers first conference setback

Poughkeepsie, NY - The #RV Vassar College Men's Basketball saw its five-game winning streak come to a close on Friday night at the Athletics and Fitness Center as the Brewers fell 62-56 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Vassar's record falls to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play while the Engineers improve to 12-4 on the season and 8-1 in Liberty League action.

First Half
  • RPI pulled ahead 8-2 in the first six minutes as Billy Feeks and PJ Scalisi each buried a triple along with a bucket from Andrew Deppe.
  • Following two Feeks free throws to make it 14-8, VC went on an 8-2 run, led by five points from junior Shea Fitzgerald and a three from sophomore Will Gregory, to even the game at 16.
  • Vassar was held scoreless in the final 7:40 of the first half as the Engineers scored the final 10 points of the half.
  • Yechiel Stewart tallied six of the 10 points in the 10-0 run to help RPI take a 26-16 lead into the halftime break.
  • The Brewers struggled in the first half as VC finished shooting 20-percent from the field, including just 2-for-18 from the three-point range.
  • RPI concluded the opening 20 minutes shooting 37-percent overall and was just 2-for-12 from three.
Second Half
  • The Engineers expanded the advantage to 34-19 on a Deppe triple and threes from Stewart and Scalisi put the Engineers up by 16 at the 12:53 mark.
  • A three-pointer from Fitzgerald with 8:15 remaining cut the lead to 45-33 but Scalisi knocked down back-to-back threes to push the RPI lead back to 16.
  • The lead remained at 17 until two free throws from senior Nathan Denham and another Fitzgerald three brought VC within 11 with 2:56 left.
  • Vassar reeled off a 7-0 run to get within four behind a layup from junior Sebastian Medina and free throws from Fitzgerald, junior Kreekor Karageuzian and Denham.
  • The Brewers were held scoreless in the final 48 seconds as RPI salted away the lead to earn the road victory.
  • Vassar improved to an even 50-percent shooting in the second half, including 4-for-10 from three, and 12-for-15 from the free throw line.
  • RPI finished the second half shooting 47.8-percent in the final 20 minutes while connecting on 8-for-15 from three and 6-for-12 from the free throw stripe.
For The Brewers
  • Fitzgerald posted a game-high 25 points while sophomore Parker Neuenhaus tallied eight points and eight rebounds.
  • Medina added seven points, three boards and two blocks along with Denham chipping in six points, five rebounds and three steals.
  • Karageuzian recorded five points, four assists and five rebounds.
For The Engineers
  • Feeks led the way with 16 points and four assists while Scalisi posting 14 points and two assists.
  • Deppe recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds and also added a team-high five assists.
  • Stewart registered 12 points and four boards.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the contest shooting 33.3-percent overall while going 6-for-28 from three and 14-for-19 from the free throw line.
  • RPI closed the matchup shooting 42-percent from the field and finished 10-for-27 from three-point distance and 10-for-16 from the free throw stripe.
  • RPI held a 12-5 edge in second chance points while the two squads were even in points off turnovers at 7-7 and points in the paint at 22-22.

  • Vassar will play host to local foe Bard tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
