Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) free-throws in the closing second capped a 21-point fourth quarter as the Vassar Women's Basketball team rallied for a 53-50 road Liberty League win at Skidmore Tuesday evening. Both Ware, with 13 points, and
Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT), with 15 tallies, totaled career-highs in the victory.
Vassar's victory was its seventh straight over Skidmore and it evens the Brewers record at 7-7 overall while improving its conference standing to 6-1. Skidmore slips to 4-10 overall on the season and 2-5 against conference rivals.
How It Happened
- Vassar opened the game with an 11 of the game's first 13 points, pulling in front 11-2 on a Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) three-pointer midway through the opening stanza.
- McDermed's conversion would be the Brewers' final points of the quarter with Skidmore scoring the final four points to pull to within 11-6 after 10 minutes.
- The Brewers used a quick 6-0 spurt early in the second frame, capped by a Ware bucket, to open a game-high 18-8 advantage.
- Following the Ware conversion, Vassar went until the 11 second mark of the quarter without scoring.
- Over the course of the Vassar drought, Skidmore used a 16-0 run to jump in front 24-18 on a Claudia Schneider bucket with 1:19 left before halftime.
- An Emery Mullen (Charlton, MA) free-throw in the closing seconds stopped the run and brought Vassar to within 24-19 at the intermission.
- Both teams shot 33.3-percent from the floor and 25-percent from three-point range over the opening 20 minutes.
- Lovett and Ware led the Vassar scoring attack with four points apiece before halftime.
- Coming out of the break, Skidmore pushed its lead to 26-19 on a Schneider jumper in the opening minute of the third quarter.
- Skidmore maintained the lead throughout the third period and carried a 37-32 lead into the final period following a Megan Drury three-pointer.
- In the fourth quarter, the Thoroughbreds surged in front by eight points twice, including on a Sophia Martinez three-pointer with 3:03 left to play that made the score 48-40.
- Following the Martinex triple, Vassar scored the next nine points, highlighted by a three-pointer from McDermed and four free-throws from Lovett to pull in front 49-48 with 42 seconds left.
- Skidmore stopped the run on a Schneider turnaround jumper with six seconds left to give the Thoroughbreds back a 50-49 lead.
- Coming out of a timeout to advance the ball, McDermed found Ware on the far side for a layup with five seconds left to give the Brewers the lead for good in the game.
- After Skidmore misfired on a three-pointer, Regan knocked in a pair of free-throws in the final second to finish the comeback and give Vassar the final three-point lead.
- Vassar shot an efficient 60-percent from the floor in the fourth quarter and finished the second half converting at an even 50-percent.
- Skidmore finished the second half shooting 39.3-percent and went 3-for-10 from three-point range.
For The Brewers
- Lovett equaled the game-high in scoring and reached a career-high 15 points on the strength on 4-for-8 shooting from the floor and a 7-for-8 effort from the free-throw line. Lovett added three rebounds and three steals to the winning effort.
- Ware reached double-figures for the third time this season with a career-high 13 points, going 6-for-14 from the field and converting the deciding layup. Ware finished off the night with three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
- Regan led the Brewers with four assists and added seven points and three steals.
- McDermed hauled in a team-high seven rebounds and closed the night with six points and a pair of steals.
- Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) collected five boards, scored four points and handed out a pair of assists.
For The Thoroughbreds
- Martinez matched the game-high with 15 points and led all players with six steals.
- Drury came off the bench to chip in 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting.
- Schneider scored nine points and collected five rebounds.
- Madison Meyer contributed eight points, three assists and two steals.
