Schenectady, NY – The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team suffered its second straight loss Saturday afternoon with a 13-11 road defeat at Union.
Amelia Poirier (Atherton, CA) led five Brewers with at least two points in the game and
Catherine Peacock (Stockton, NJ) paced the squad with seven draw controls.
Saturday's loss marks the first time this season the Brewers have suffered consecutive defeats and drops them to 8-3 overall and 3-3 in Liberty League play. Union jumps to 8-3 overall and 4-3 against league opponents.
How It Happened
- Vassar got out of the gate quickly on Saturday, scoring three times inside the first four minutes of play.
- Emilia DiLiberto (Allison Park, PA) opened the scoring ahead of player-up goals from Tess Billings (Deerfield, IL) and Sigrid Fredlund (Seattle, WA) to give Vassar a 3-0 lead.
- After Union scored twice to cut the deficit to 3-2, Vassar finished the opening stanza with three more goals, including two from Poirier, to grab a 6-2 lead through 15 minutes.
- Fredlund would open the second quarter scoring and give Vassar a 7-2 lead with what proved to be the Brewers only goal of the frame.
- Union did not allow a score over the final 12 minutes of the first half and got four straight goals, including a trio of markers from Maddy Schiller, to slice the Garnet Chargers' deficit to 7-6 heading into halftime.
- Coming out of the break, Union blanked Vassar in the third period and outscored the Brewers 5-0 to open an 11-7 advantage.
- Gillian Joseph had a big quarter for Union, scoring twice and assisting on two other goals.
- Union pushed its scoring run out to 11-0 with the first two goals of the final stanza.
- Lana Mickelson and Christina Guanci scored the first two goals of the final frame to push the Garnet Chargers in front 13-7.
- Poirier got the Brewers back on the board for the first time since the 12:06 mark of the second quarter with her third goal of the game.
- Vassar went on to score the final four goals of the game, including Poirier's fourth of the game in the closing seconds, to pull to within the final 13-11 margin.
For The Brewers
- Poirer moved into second on the team in goals with 23 following Saturday's four-goal output and ranks fourth on the team in points with 27. Poirier added a pair of groundballs in the game for the Brewers.
- DiLiberto closed the game with two goals, two caused turnovers and five draw controls.
- Fredlund found the back of the net twice for Vassar.
- Billings and Elizabeth Burgess (Columbus, OH) each posted a goal and an assist with Billings adding a caused turnovers and two draw controls.
- Peacock won a team-high seven draw controls for the Brewers and ranks second on the team in draws with 40.
- Bree MacMullen (Medford, NJ) suffered the loss in goal with 12 saves, reaching double-figures in stops for the third time this season. MacMullen led the team in groundballs with six on Saturday.
For The Garnet Chargers
- Joseph led all players with eight points on Saturday, netting four goals and assisting on four others. Joseph secured three groundballs and forced four turnovers.
- Schiller recorded a hat trick to go along with a groundball and a forced miscue.
- Maddie Doyle scored twice for Union in the win.
- Greta Maurer led all players with five caused turnovers, adding four groundballs, four draws and a goal.
- Mickelson collected five groundballs to go along with a goal and two draw controls.
- Sydney Widlitz earned the win in goal with five saves and three groundballs.
