Vassar Holds Off Maritime, 12-7

O’Hara totals four points; Chain-Onn forces three turnovers

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team got back into the win column Saturday afternoon with a 12-7 non-conference win over Maritime. Shane O'Hara (Warrenton, VA) led the offensive attack with four points, while Kieran Chai-Onn (Rockville, MD) forced three turnovers on defense.
 
Saturday's win improves Vassar to 3-1 on the season through four games, while Maritime drops to 2-3 on the season.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar scored back-to-back goals to open the scoring with Gavin Arcuri (Westhampton, NY) and John Malone (Devon, PA) scoring inside the first eight minutes to give Vassar a 2-0 lead.
  • Maritime's Joseph Fazio sliced the Vassar lead to 2-0, before the Brewers ripped off the final five goals of the opening quarter to take a 7-1 lead through 15 minutes.
  • Drew Mazzocco (Leesburg, VA) sparked the run for the Brewers with a goal and two assists to close out the first period.
  • Vassar extended its scoring run to 7-0 to open the second frame with goals from Nate Kratovil (Stevensville, MD) and O'Hara to give the Brewers a commanding 9-1 lead.
  • Maritime closed out the first half scoring with 88 seconds left before halftime on a Ryan Hannaford tally that sent the two teams to the break with Vassar leading 9-2.
  • Coming out of halftime, O'Hara and Jack Rufa (New Milford, CT) found the back of the net top push Vassar in front 11-2 with 5:45 left in the third quarter.
  • Connor Tomich started a 5-1 scoring run to close the game for the Privateers with a tally at the third quarter horn.
  • Maritime scored four of the five goals in the final stanza, including a goal and an assist from Hannaford, to close to within the final five goal deficit.
  • Gunner Olsen (Lake Oswego, OR) finished off a feed from Arcuri for his first career goal and the Brewers' only marker of the final stanza.
 
For The Brewers
  • O'Hara continued a strong start to the season with two goals and two helpers to push his team lead in goals to eight and points to 13.
  • Arcuri finished off two goals and helped on a third to finish a three-point day. Arcuri added three groundballs for the Brewers.
  • Malone potted two goals and Mazzocco finished with a goal and a pair of assists.
  • Anderson Eads (Brightwaters, NY) finished the day with a goal and a helper.
  • Kratovil tallied the deciding goal in the second frame.
  • Chai-Onn finished a strong defensive day with three forced miscues and a team-high five groundballs.
  • Hayden Sofield (Long Beach, NY) caused two turnovers and collected three groundballs.
  • Drew Amirsakis (Darien, CT) also caused a pair of turnovers and collected a groundball.
  • Eli Sherman (San Francisco, CA) went 6-for-12 in face-offs and picked up three groundballs.
  • Drew Quinn (Garden City, NY) earned the win in goal with seven saves in 45 minutes.
  • Amdrew Timson (Babylon, NY) made a trio of saves in the fourth quarter.
 
For The Privateers
  • Hannaford finished the day with two goals and an assist, adding five groundballs.
  • Tomich scored twice.
  • Nicholas Uzakewicz recorded a goal and an assist for Maritime.
  • Thomas Kennedy and Nick Spista each finished with two caused turnovers and a groundball.
  • Joseph Bruno won 14 face-offs and collected three groundballs.
  • Michael Monahan was busy in goal, finishing with 11 saves.
