Men's Basketball Falls to Union on Buzzer Beater

Vassar has five game winning streak snapped on a buzzer beater from Union's Matthew Garside

Schenectady, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team saw its five game winning streak come to an end on Saturday as Union's Matthew Garside banked home a buzzer beating three-pointer to send the Garnet Chargers to a 78-76 victory in Liberty League action. Vassar's record falls to 14-7 overall and 10-4 in conference play while Union improves to 12-9 and 8-6 in Liberty League action.

First Half
  • Vassar earned an early 9-3 lead following four quick points from sophomore Sebastian Medina along with a bucket from junior Nathan Denham and a triple from sophomore Shea Fitzgerald.
  • The Brewers advantage grew to double digits at the 14:23 mark as Fitzgerald lay-in put Vassar up 15-5 followed by a bucket from junior JP Miranda to go ahead by 12.
  • A layup from Harrison Collins reduced the lead to 17-11 with 11:23 to go before the Brewers lead grew back to double digits at 26-15 on a Fitzgerald jumper.
  • Denham's lay-in with 6:29 left in the half pushed the Vassar lead to a game-high 15 points at 32-17.
  • Tanner Tedesco's jumper cut the lead down to seven with 3:48 remaining in the first half before a three from senior Alex Walters put VC ahead 37-25 at the 2:13 mark.
  • Matthew Garside's three-pointer put the Garnet Chargers within six with 1:22 to go until two free throws from Miranda pushed the Brewers halftime lead to 39-31.
  • The Brewers ended the first half shooting 51.5-percent from the field while going just 2-for-9 from the three-point line.
  • Union finished the half at 34.3-percent overall while connecting on 3-for-12 from beyond the three-point stripe.
Second Half
  • Union opened the second half on a 14-2 run as a layup from Christian Dufort and a three from Garside put the Garnet Chargers ahead 45-41.
  • The lead grew to six points on two free throws from Dufort until Vassar got within one on a Denham layup with 9:48 remaining.
  • Tedesco's layup at the 6:21 mark pushed Union back ahead by six as the Brewers would claw back once again and take 69-68 lead on a three-point play from sophomore Kreekor Karageuzian with 3:40 left.
  • The Garnet Chargers regained the lead at 73-71 on two free throws from Garside until sophomore Avery Lee knocked down a jumper to even it at 73 with 2:02 to go.
  • Neither team scored again until Tedesco converted two free throws with just 22 seconds remaining in regulation.
  • For the second straight game, junior Sacha Greenberg knocked down a three-pointer to put the Brewers ahead in the final seconds as his three put Vassar ahead 76-75 with four seconds remaining.
  • Garside would play the hero in this game as he banked in a three-pointer from just inside the half court line for a 78-76 victory.
  • The Brewers closed the second half shooting 51.7-percent overall while going just 2-for-7 from the three-point line.
  • Union improved to 48.4-percent from the field and knocked down 6-of-9 from behind the three-point line.
For The Brewers
  • Fitzgerald finished with a game-high 23 points (9-for-18), four assists, two steals and four rebounds while Lee added 14 points and three assists.
  • Denham tallied 12 points and three steals along with Karageuzian supplying nine points and three boards.
  • Medina recorded six points, six rebounds and three steals while Greenberg added five points off the bench.
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Garside posted a game-high 23 points while Tedesco garnered 22 points and three assists.
  • Dufort recorded 13 points, nine boards and three assists along with Brendan Reid registering six points, 15 rebounds and four assists.
  • Jack Plesser added six points, four boards, two assists and two blocks.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 51.6-percent overall while shooting 4-for-16 from three-point range and 8-for-10 from the free throw line.
  • Union ended the game at 40.9-percent from the field while going 9-for-21 from three and 15-for-18 from the free throw stripe.
  • Union held a 14-6 advantage on points off turnovers and 9-2 in second chance points.
  • Vassar held a 40-28 edge in points in the paint and 21-9 in fast break points.
