Men’s Tennis Opens Spring Season Against MIT, Drew

Brewers to play eight home matches this spring

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Tennis team kicks-off the spring season this weekend with a visit to MIT on Saturday afternoon before hosting Drew on Sunday. Saturday's match in Cambridge, MA is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with the Brewers and Rangers scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
 
At A Glance
  • Vassar closed the 2023-24 season with a 14-6 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the Liberty League.
  • The Brewers scored victories over Ithaca and Hobart on its way to advancing to the Liberty League Championship Final last spring.
  • Vassar was topped 5-2 by #22 RPI in a hard fought match in the final.
  • The Brewers had four players named All-Liberty League in 2024, including Fernando Bauermeister (Winter Park, FL) and Eugene Lee (Chico, CA) named Second Team All-Conference in doubles.
  • Vassar holds a 1-0 record this season after topping Bard 7-0 on September 13.
 
Returners
  • Lee returns for a sophomore season after posting a 13-4 record as a rookie in singles play.
  • Lee added 12 more victories in doubles action a season ago, including three victories at the top flight.
  • Bauermeister produced nine wins in doubles play last season, including three wins teamed with Lee at the top position.
  • Arnav Agostinho (Brooklyn, NY) scored four wins in singles last spring.
  • Pedro Cattaruzzi (Chatham, NJ) returns to the Vassar lineup after producing 14 wins playing at third doubles last season.
  • Cattaruzzi teamed with three different partners in doubles, including Lee to post eight wins.
  • Miles Sondergaard Jensen (Newton, MA) returns after scoring a singles win a season ago.
  • Also back in 2024-25 for Vassar is James Balon (Winnetka, IL) who won 11 singles matches for the Brewers in 2022-23.
 
Newcomers
  • Vassar welcomes a talented pair of newcomers in Joseph Braun (Albuquerque, NM) and Joaquin Gil (Brooklyn, NY).
  • Braun joins the Brewers after a successful high school career at Albuquerque Academy that included consecutive state and district team titles as well a district and state singles championship.
  • Gil comes to Poughkeepsie prep career at Berkely Carroll that resulted in a trip to the State Semifinals. Gil competed at first singles.  
 
The Schedule
  • Following the opening weekend of the spring, Vassar will head to Orlando, FL to play six times over Spring Break.
  • Upon returning from the Sunshine State, Vassar opens Liberty League play at home against Hobart on March 22.
  • The Brewers head to the North Country on March 29 to take on St. Lawrence before starting a five-match home stand.
  • The home stand includes non-conference matches with St. Thomas Aquinas, Nichols and Coast Guard as well as league foes Ithaca and RIT on Senior Day.
  • After visiting Skidmore and RPI, the Brewers will round out the regular season at home against RPI on April 26.
  • The Liberty League Championship will return to the Reis Tennis Center at Cornell contested May 2-4.
