Men's Basketball Falls in Defensive Battle in the First Round of the Liberty League Championship

Brewers close the season at 16-10 overall

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team battled hard in a defensive slugfest in the First Round of the 2025 Liberty League Championship as the Brewers ultimately fell 58-50 to sixth-seeded St. Lawrence at the Athletics and Fitness Center on Tuesday evening. The Saints advance to the semifinals against second-seeded Ithaca on Friday evening while the Brewers season ends at 16-10 overall.

First Half
  • Vassar opened the contest strong as the Brewers took an early 12-3 lead following triples from seniors Luke Adams and Alex Walters along with a dunk from junior Nathan Denham and a jumper from sophomore Sebastian Medina.
  • SLU responded with a 12-2 run as Colton Suriano and Dan Anderson each connected on a three-pointer along with Anderson's layup at the 8:38 mark evened the score at 14.
  • Back-to-back jumpers from Denham put VC tied at 22 apiece with three minutes to go until the Saints closed the half on a 9-2 run with Gavin Macaulay's free throws giving SLU a nine point advantage with 48 seconds left.
  • A late layup from sophomore JP Miranda off an offensive rebound cut SLU's lead down to 31-24 heading into the halftime break.
  • VC ended the half shooting 30-percent from the field and were held to just 2-for-12 from three-point territory.
  • St. Lawrence closed the opening 20 minutes shooting 37.5-percent overall but connected on 6-for-10 from three.
Second Half
  • The Saints scored the first six points coming out of the half to make it a 37-24 game with 15:41 left on an Adam Dudzinksi bucket.
  • Trey Syroka's three-pointer put SLU ahead by 14 before VC battled back to within eight on a three from Adams and a layup from Miranda with 12:18 to go.
  • Dudzinski's lay-in at the 5:44 mark put the Saints back ahead by 14 points until two free throws from Medina along with four straight points from junior Sacha Greenberg got the Brewers within eight with three minutes remaining.
  • Vassar could only get as close as seven points on a Denham make with 1:52 to go as the Saints extended the lead back to double digits in the final two mintues.
  • The Brewers finished the final 20 minutes shooting 26.7-percent overall while going just 3-for-14 from three-point range.
  • SLU shot 36.4-percent overall in the second half and cooled to only 3-for-11 from three-point distance.
For The Brewers
  • Adams scored a team-high 11 points and grabbed five rebounds along with Denham registering a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
  • Medina tallied 10 points, nine boards and three assists while Miranda chipped in six points, three boards and two assists.
For The Saints
  • Dudzinski recorded a game-high 18 points, five rebounds and four steals along with Anderson finishing with 11 points and two steals.
  • G. Macaulay registered nine points, five assists, five boards and two steals while Troy McPherson added nine points and four boards off the bench.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the contest shooting 28.3-percent overall while going 5-for-26 from three and 11-for-12 from the free throw line.
  • SLU ended the matchup shooting 37.5-percent from the field along with 9-for-21 from three-point distance and 13-19 from the free throw stripe.
  • VC held a 15-8 edge in points off turnovers and a 17-9 advantage in second chance points.
  • The Brewers also held an 18-14 edge in points in the paint while the Saints held a 15-10 advantage in bench points.
