Vassar Opens California Swing with Setback to #18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

Lee tallies a game-high 19 points for the Brewers

Claremont, CA - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team returned to the court for the final time in 2025 as the Brewers began its two-game California road trip with a 73-61 setback against #18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Tuesday afternoon. The Brewers fall to 6-2 overall on the season while the Stags remain undefeated at 11-0 overall.

First Half
  • In a low-scoring opening 20 minutes, the Stags took an early 9-5 lead on a triple from Will Householter until a jumper from senior Nathan Denham trimmed the advantage to two with 15:44 remaining.
  • Another three-pointer from Householter at the 13:05 mark to put CMS ahead 14-7 before Vassar used two free throws from junior Avery Lee and a bucket from classmate Sebastian Medina to cut the lead to three with 9:43 to go in the first half.
  • A 13-5 run for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps over the next seven minutes gave the Stags a 27-16 lead, led by six points from Joey Kennedy and five points from Householter.
  • A lay-in from Denham and two free throws from Lee cut the CMS lead to 29-20 at the halftime break.
  • Vassar was limited to just 21.4-percent shooting in the first half, including 1-for-12 from three-point range, while going 7-for-10 from the free throw line.
  • CMS was held to 27.3-percent overall in the first 20 minutes while knocking down 3-for-6 from three-point distance and 8-for-9 from the free throw stripe.
Second Half
  • VC drew within seven coming out of the break on a Medina triple at the 18:06 mark before a three-point play from Cahal Connolly pushed the Stags ahead by 11.
  • A quick 6-2 spurt, capped by a three-pointer from junior Shea Fitzgerald, brought the Brewers back within five with 10:47 remaining in regulation.
  • CMS answered with six straight points as a jumper from Reid Jones put the Stags back in front by double digits with just under nine minutes left.
  • Jumpers from sophomore Parker Neuenhaus and Denham reduced the advantage to 53-46 at the 6:52 mark.
  • The Stags lead ballooned to a game-high 16 points with four and a half minutes left on consecutive buckets from Kennedy and Connolly.
  • Back-to-back makes from Neuenhaus and Lee brought the Brewers as close as 10 in the final four minutes before CMS would let VC get no closer in the final two minutes.
  • VC improved to 43.6-percent shooting overall in the second half while going 5-for-15 from three and 2-for-4 from the free throw line.
  • The Stags shot a blistering 55.9-percent in the final 20 minutes, including just 1-for-5 from three, and went 5-for-8 from the free throw stripe.
For The Brewers
  • Lee finished with a team-high 19 points, two steals and two rebounds while Denham tallied 12 points (5-for-7), seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
  • Fitzgerald added nine points, seven boards and two steals along with Medina recording seven points, a team-high five assists and four rebounds.
  • Neuenhaus posted seven points and three rebounds while junior Kreekor Karageuzian chipped in four points, seven rebounds and four assists.
For The Stags
  • Householter poured in a game-high 24 points (9-for-18), five assists, six rebounds and two steals while Connolly finished with a double-double with 17 points (7-for-11) and 11 rebounds.
  • Kennedy posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards along with recording seven assists and five blocks.
  • Jones secured 14 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists while Brady Karich tallied six points, four assists, two steals and two boards.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the contest shooting 34.3-percent from the field while connecting on 6-for-27 from three-point range and 9-for-14 from the free throw line.
  • CMS closed the afternoon shooting 41.8-percent overall, including 4-for-11 from three, and 13-for-17 from the free throw stripe.
  • Vassar held a 12-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • The Stags outscored the Brewers 38-24 in points in the paint and 13-11 in second chance points.
