Vassar Tabbed Liberty League Women's Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year

James McCowan earns second honor in the last three seasons

Troy, NY - The Liberty League announced its major award winners for women's cross country this afternoon as Vassar College Women's Cross Country Head Coach James McCowan and assistant coach Spencer Bossi-Johnson were named the league's Coaching Staff of the Year.

This is McCowan's second honor in the last three seasons as he has led the Brewers to three straight Liberty League championships along with three consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. Vassar finished 10th out of 32 scoring teams at the NCAA Championships in November, which was the program's highest ever finish at Nationals and is the first time that the Brewers have finished in the top-10 in the nation.

McCowan, in his 21st season at the helm of the Brewers, saw junior Haley Schoenegge earn her second straight All-American honor with a 15th place finish at the NCAA Championship while seven student-athletes earned All-Liberty League honors with Schoenegge, senior Anika Mueller-Hickler and junior Adelaide Nyhan leading the way with All-First Team status. Juniors Acadia Helfand and Cayley Swaim each scored All-Liberty League Second Team honors while sophomore Chloe Bibula and junior Norah Reade secured All-Liberty League Honorable Mention honors.

Vassar also finished the season with three United States Cross Country & Track and Field Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Mideast Region selections with Schoenegge, Nyhan and Mueller-Hickler each scoring top-30 finishes at the NCAA Mideast Regional at the Ronald C. Hoffman Cross Country Course in Canton.

The Brewers collected three Liberty League Performers of the Week in 2025 as Schoenegge was named the league's Performer of the Week on September 15 along with first year Cate Feudtner earning Rookie of the Week status on September 22 and October 20. Off the course, Vassar recorded a conference-best 15 Liberty League All-Academic Team selections.

Vassar was ranked nationally in the USTFCCCA National Coaches Poll for all 10 weeks and finished the season in the top-10 for the first time in school history.
