Women's Volleyball Coasts to Sweep of New Paltz

Brewers extend winning streak to four straight matches

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team extended its winning streak to four straight matches as the Brewers coasted to a 25-17, 25-18, 25-10 home sweep against New Paltz on Wednesday evening at Kenyon Hall. Vassar's record improves to 17-7 overall while the Hawks drop to 15-12 on the season.

First Set
  • Vassar recorded the first six points of the match following two aces from junior Francesca Medrano, two kills from junior Maura McAusland and a block from McAusland and first year Brenna Olson.
  • The Hawks drew back within 8-5 on a kill from Nora Keating and an ace from Courtney Meyer.
  • VC expanded its advantage to 17-9 behind two aces from junior Holland Kaplan, a kill each from Medrano and McAusland and a block from Olson and McAusland.
  • Kills from McAusland and sophomore Erin Lovett along with a solo block from Olson pushed Vassar ahead to 21-12.
  • The Brewers took the opening set victory after a kill each from McAusland, Lovett and Kaplan and a block from Medrano and senior Rebecca Gutierrez.
Second Set
  • New Paltz collected five of the first six points to take a 5-1 lead following two aces from Reagan Dyba and a kill apiece from Lola Konopa and Maria Weigand.
  • Vassar cut the deficit to 9-7 on three kills from Kaplan and a block from Gutierrez and Lovett.
  • Following a Weigand ace, the Brewers regained the lead on two McAusland winners, a kill from Kaplan and a block from Gutierrez and Medrano.
  • The lead ballooned to 22-15 on two Gutierrez kills, a block from Lovett and Olson and an ace from senior Ellie Kogan.
  • Kills from Lexi Stragalas and Weigand trimmed the lead to 23-18 until a kill from Kaplan and a block from Gutierrez and McAusland clinched the second set victory.
Third Set
  • Following a 4-1 lead for New Paltz to begin the third set, Vassar scored the next four points to go ahead 5-4 on a Kogan ace and a kill from Lovett.
  • Mirella Valuzzi's kill evened the set at eight before the Brewers tallied nine straight points, led by four McAusland kills and an ace from sophomore Chloe Mau.
  • Medrano and McAusland each buried kills and Medrano rattled off four straight aces to put Vassar ahead 23-9.
  • McAusland closed the sweep for the Brewers with a kill and an ace to take the set 25-10.
For The Brewers
  • McAusland led the way with 14 kills (.433), three blocks, 14 digs and an ace along with Lovett tallying six kills, three blocks and three digs.
  • Kaplan recorded six kills, two aces and three digs while Medrano registered 22 assists, three kills, eight aces, two blocks and six digs.
  • Gutierrez chipped in two winners and six blocks along with Olson chipping in four blocks.
  • Kogan lifted nine digs and added two aces.
For The Hawks
  • Stragalas garnered a team-high six kills and three blocks while Konopa buried five kills.
  • Keating chipped in four winners and two blocks along with Weigand adding three kills and seven digs.
  • Elena Savage tallied 14 assists, two kills and eight digs while Dyba secured two kills, two aces and five digs.
  • Meyer lifted a team-high 11 digs and Riley Guzman added seven digs.
Up Next
  • Vassar closes the regular season with a tri-match against United States Merchant Marine Academy at 11:00 a.m. followed by Senior Day against Hunter at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
  • New Paltz concludes the regular season slate against Stevens on Friday night.
