Brewers Drop Season Opener At New Paltz

Regan nets career-high 17 points

New Paltz, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team opened the 2025-26 season on Wednesday with a 70-55 road loss at New Paltz. Junior Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) led the Vassar scoring attack with a career-high 17 points.
 
Vassar begins the season at 0-1 following Wednesday's defeat, while New Paltz improves to 2-0.
 
How It Happened
  • New Paltz never trailed on Wednesday and following a Elodie Ware (Columbus, OH) three-point play that tied the score at 5-5, the Hawks used a 13-0 run to open a 18-5 advantage.
  • A Ware lay-in early in the second period got the Brewers' disadvantage back under double-figures at 18-10, but New Paltz responded with the next points to surge in front 24-10 with 6:17 left before halftime.
  • The Hawks moved in front by a half-high 19 points twice in the final 3:47 of the half, including on a Deanna Barry conversion with 64 seconds left to give New Paltz a 37-18 halftime advantage.
  • New Paltz shot an even 50-percent from the floor over the opening 20 minutes, including 3-for-8 from three-point range.
  • Vassar was limited to 21.9-percent shooting in the first half and went 0-for-14 from three-point range.
  • The Hawks' advantage would not slip under the final 15-point decision in the second half.
  • New Paltz jumped in front 49-26 on a Grace Koehler free-throw late in the third period.
  • The Hawks would match the game-high advantage of 23 points on three occasions in the final stanza.
  • Vassar scored the final seven points of the contest, including a pair of conversions from First Year Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA).
  • New Paltz cooled to 33.3-percent shooting after halftime and went 3-for-9 from three-point range.

For The Brewers
  • Regan was the only Brewer to score in double-figures, reaching a career-high point total on 8-for-19 shooting to go along with three rebounds and five steals.
  • Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) chipped in nine points and picked up two steals.
  • Shoulders scored nine points in her collegiate debut and collected seven rebounds.
  • Ware scored seven points and hauled in six rebounds in her collegiate debut.
  • Emery Mullen (Charlton, MA) led the Brewers with eight rebounds and three assists to go along with four steals.
  • Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) finished with five points and four thefts.
 
For The Hawks
  • Brianna Fitzgerald finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points and hauling in a game-high 15 rebounds.
  • Summer Perry recorded a double-double on the strength of 10 points and 12 boards while adding a game-high five assists.
  • Kayden Cornell came off the bench to score 13 points.
  • Sierra Carter rounded out the win with five points, four rebounds and four assists.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar closed the night shooting 32.8-percent overall and went 1-for-23 from three-point range.
  • New Paltz converted at 41.5-percent for the game and finished 6-for-17 from bonus distance.
  • New Paltz turned 14 offensive rebounds into a 20-6 advantage in second chance scoring.
  • Vassar held a slim 40-36 edge in scoring in the paint.
