Brewers Topple Golden Knights; Clinch Top Seed In Liberty League Championship

Brewers earn first ever conference regular season crown, set program record for wins in a season

Poughkeepsie, NY – Behind goals from Elena Valle (Rocky Hill, CT), Sonya Franklin (Lancaster, PA) and Gianna Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL), the Vassar College Women's Soccer team posted a 3-0 home win over Clarkson on Senior Day. The win helped earn Vassar the top seed in the upcoming Liberty League Championship and the program's first ever regular season title and led Vassar to the most wins ever in a season.
 
Prior to Saturday's victory, a win that gave Vassar a program record 14th victory, the Brewers recognized seniors Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA), Lily Brigman (Mebane, NC), Rebecca Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, CA), Livy Soble (Sandwich, MA), Lucy Getzin (Ithaca, NY), Lindsey Nihei (Honolulu, HI) and Jessica Bowman (Larchmont, NY) before their last career regular season home game.
 
How It Happened
  • The Brewers broke through with the only goal of the first half in the 26th minute when Valle finished off a passing play from Panarelli and Rodriguez at the 25:54 mark of the contest.
  • Vassar controlled play before halftime, outshooting Clarkson 10-0 while holding a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
  • Vassar came out of halftime and doubled its lead at the 53:00 mark when McGrath found Franklin from the right wing and Franklin deposited her eighth goal of the season.
  • Panarelli put the finishing touches on the victory at the 85:38 mark when she blasted a shot from outside the top left corner of the box into the top right corner to close out the scoring in the game.
  • Vassar unleashed 16 more shots after halftime, outshooting the Golden Knights 16-5 in the second half.
  • Vassar held a slight 2-1 edge in corner kicks in the second stanza.
  • Clarkson goalkeeper, Isabelle Wood, made five second half saves.
 
For The Brewers
  • Valle scored for the fourth time this season and recorded her first career game winning goal. Valle pushes her season point total to 12 with Saturday's tally.
  • Franklin scored her eighth goal of the campaign and sits third on the team with 18 points.
  • Panarelli closed a three-point day with her eighth goal and third assist, moving her season point total to 19.
  • Rodriguez assisted on her team leading ninth goal of the season.
  • McGrath posted her fourth helper of the campaign.
  • Franklin and McGrath each led the team with six shots apiece in the game.
  • Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA) recorded her fifth shutout of the season without having to make a save in the game.
 
For The Golden Knights
  • Wood made six saves in the contest for Clarkson.
  • Five different players recorded a shot in the game.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar held a commanding 26-5 advantage in shots, including a 9-0 edge in shots on goal.
  • Vassar took five of the six corner kicks in the game.
  • Fouls on the day were even at 9-9.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar will host a Semifinal Round game on Friday with game time and opponent to be announced.
