Grace Wiley made three key saves in goal to carry the Vassar College Field Hockey team to a 1-0 victory over #25 Ithaca to open Liberty League play on Friday afternoon at Weinberg Field. Vassar's record improves to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in conference action while the Bombers drop to 7-4 on the season and 0-2 in Liberty League play.
How It Happened
- Vassar withstood a strong Ithaca push to end the first quarter as the Bombers collected four corners in the final three and a half minutes of the opening period.
- Wiley made a stop on Brenna Schoenfeld along with senior Gianna Hoover making her first defensive save of the season to keep the game scoreless.
- The deciding goal came six minutes into the second quarter after the Brewers earned a corner and first year Sierra Chow inserted a pass to Jammar who buried the shot past the keeper to put Vassar on top.
- Coming out of the halftime break, Wiley made an early save on Caroline Folan to keep the Brewers in front 1-0.
- VC had multiple strong opportunities to increase the advantage but Ithaca goalie Maeve Clark made three saves on first year Audrey Izzo and sophomore Zoe Robinson.
- In the final quarter, Wiley made another big save on Schoenfeld with five minutes left in the quarter as the Brewers earned a nationally-ranked conference victory.
For The Brewers
- Jammar scored her fifth goal of the season to move her into third on the team in points with 10.
- Chow picked up her first assist of the campaign and Hoover made her first defensive save of the season.
- Beseth and Izzo each had two shots on target while Robinson also registered a shot on goal.
- Wiley picked up sixth victory of the season and made three saves in the shutout.
For The Bombers
- Schoenfeld finished with three shots, including two on goal, along with Folan and Toni Ierardi each firing a shot on net.
- Clark made five saves in goal for the Bombers.
Game Statistics
- Vassar held a slim 10-9 advantage in shots along with a 6-4 edge in shots on target.
- Penalty corners finished even at eight on the night.
