Women's Volleyball Opens Conference Play With Sweep of Bard

Vassar wins third straight match and starts conference play at 1-0

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team opened conference play on the road against Bard on Wednesday evening as the Brewers completed a 25-18, 25-13, 25-14 sweep of the Raptors. Vassar's record improves to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in Liberty League play while Bard drops to 3-12 on the season and 0-1 in conference action.

First Set
  • Bard opened the match with a 4-2 lead following a kill each from Nyla Lawrence and Xenia Vassou and an ace from Ella Small.
  • Neither team gained more than a one-point advantage again until the Raptors went ahead 14-12 on Paola De La Cruz ace.
  • Vassar battled back to go ahead 16-14 following two winners from junior Holland Kaplan.
  • The Brewers advantage expanded to 22-17 behind an ace and a kill from Kaplan along with a winner from junior Maura McAusland.
  • VC took the opening set after a kill from sophomore Erin Lovett, an ace from first year Summer Stern and a winner from McAusland.
Second Set
  • The Brewers collected a 6-2 lead to begin the second set as Lovett buried two kills along with a winner each from McAusland and sophomore Eleanor Gegen.
  • Bard got back within 10-7 on an ace from Becca Wintjen and a kill from Annika Flittie.
  • Following a Wintjen kill to put the Raptors within 15-12, Vassar used a six-point run, led by two McAusland aces, a block from Kaplan and Lovett and kills from Gegen and McAusland to push the lead to 21-12.
  • Vassar cruised to a 25-13 set victory after aces from McAusland and senior Ellie Kogan along with a kill from Kaplan.
Third Set
  • VC rolled to a 6-3 lead to start the third set behind kills from McAusland, Kaplan and junior Francesca Medrano.
  • The lead quickly grew to 10-3 on two aces from McAusland and a winner from Lovett.
  • Two more kills from Kaplan and a service ace from junior T Petro ballooned the lead to 16-6.
  • An ace from first year Summer Stern and a winner from McAusland increased the Vassar advantage to 20-9.
  • Back-to-back aces from Flittie brought the Raptors within 20-13 but an ace from Medrano and a block from Lovett and McAusland completed the sweep.
For The Brewers
  • Kaplan closed the night with 11 kills (.296), three aces, a block and five digs while McAusland garnered 11 kills (.429), six aces, two blocks and nine digs.
  • Lovett added four kills and three blocks along with Gegen tallied two kills.
  • Medrano recorded 22 assists, an ace and five digs while Kogan lifted a team-high 10 digs.
For The Raptors
  • Flittie finished with eight kills, three aces and eight digs along with Lawrence adding three winners.
  • Wentjen tallied three kills and five digs while Vassou and Carmen Merrick each chipped in three kills.
  • Fernanda Julien handed out a team-high 19 assists and Small lifted a team-high eight digs.
Up Next
  • Vassar heads north for matches against Clarkson and SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon.
  • Bard is off until October 10 when they play host to William Smith.
