Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Clarkson

Trio of Knights score in double-figures

Poughkeepsie, NY – Senior Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) led three players in double-figures on Friday as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team eased to a 77-47 home Liberty League victory over Clarkson.
 
Friday's win, Vassar's fifth straight over the Golden Knights, pushes it to 13-5 overall and 9-2 in Liberty League play. Clarkson falls to 6-12 on the season and 2-9 against conference rivals.
 
First Half
  • After the two teams traded baskets to open the scoring, Vassar pulled in front 8-2 on a pair of Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) free-throws just under four minutes into the contest.
  • Vassar pulled in front 14-4 on a Gelb conversion from the free-throw line and later grabbed an 18-4 lead on a trio of Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) free-throws with 1:21 left in the opening stanza.
  • The Brewers went just 2-for-10 from the floor in the first 10 minutes, but went 13-for-15 from the free-throw line to carry an 18-6 lead into the second frame.
  • Vassar surged in front 24-8 early in the second period on a Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) bucket.
  • After Clarkson pulled to within 11 points with 3:11 left before halftime, Vassar got a triple from McDermed and a transition layup from Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) at the horn to take a 31-15 lead into the intermission.
  • After shooting an even 50-percent from the floor in the second quarter, Vassar closed the first half shooting 36.4-percent overall with a pair of three-pointers.
  • Clarkson was held to 27.3-percent shooting in the first half and went 1-for-8 from three-point range.
  • Gelb led all scorers at the break with 10 points.
Second Half
  • The two teams combined for 44 points in the third quarter, but Vassar's advantage never fell below 13 points.
  • The Brewers' pulled in front 46-26 on a Gelb triple at the 4:10 mark of the third period.
  • A Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) three-pointer with 1:25 left in the frame gave Vassar a 54-32 advantage.
  • McDermed gave the Brewers a 61-38 lead on a bucket 1:55 into the final frame.
  • An Ippolito three-point play with 4:38 left in the contest gave Vassar a 75-44 advantage.
  • The Brewers took a game-high 33-point lead when an Emery Mullen (Charlton, MA) jumper made the score 77-44 with 2:00 left in the tilt.
  • Vassar shot an efficient 64.3-percent in the fourth quarter and finished the second half converting at 53.3-percent from the floor and went 6-for-12 from three-point range.
  • Clarkson shot 42.9-percent after halftime and knocked down three triples.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb led all scorers in the game with 26 points, going 9-for-10 from the field, 3-for-4 from behind the arc and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Gelb finished off the win with four rebounds, two assists and five steals.
  • Ahearn reached double-figures for the fourth time this season with 13 points, connecting on two three-pointers and going 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.
  • Harvey finished the win with 10 points, three assists and three steals.
  • Erin Lovett (Norwalk, CT) led the team with nine rebounds and chipped in eight points, three assists, a block and a steal.
  • Ippolito contributed seven points and five rebounds to the winning effort.
  • McDermed matched the game-high with five assists and added nine points, a block and two steals.
 
For The Golden Knights
  • Raelin Burns led the way with 14 points, adding a trio of steals.
  • Cassidy Dumont finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
  • Bella Doyle handed out five assists and collected seven rebounds.
  • Fallon Griffin connected on three triples, finishing with nine points.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 46.2-percent for the game and went 8-for-19 from three-point range.
  • Clarkson converted at 36-percent and went 4-for-15 from behind the arc.
  • Vassar outscored Clarkson from the free-throw line 21-7.
  • The Vassar defense forced 23 turnovers, leading to a 28-12 edge in points off of miscues.
  • The Brewers held a 28-22 edge in paint points.
  • Fast break points went to Vassar 18-2.
  • Vassar finished with an 11-4 edge in second chance points.
