Poughkeepsie, NY - Four Brewers netted double-digit points with junior
Nathan Denham leading the way with 16 points as the Vassar College Men's Basketball team collected its third straight victory with a 76-70 win over conference foe Clarkson at home on Friday evening. Vassar's record improves to 12-6 overall and 8-3 in Liberty League play while the Golden Knights fall to 9-9 on the season and 5-6 in conference play.
First Half
- Clarkson opened the contest with a 9-4 advantage behind triples from Steve DeRegis, Braeden Burns and Lorenzo Rappa.
- Vassar drew within one at 13-12 on a three-pointer from senior Luke Adams and took its first lead on the next jumper from Adams to make it 14-13 with 11:39 left in the first half.
- Jack Dalgety's triple evened the score at 16 all before a dunk from Denham and two free throws from sophomore Sebastian Medina pushed the Vassar lead to 20-16.
- A quick 8-0 run for the Golden Knights put them ahead 24-20 on a DeRegis triple at the 6:48 mark.
- VC answered with a 7-0 run as a three from senior Alex Walters along with jumpers from sophomore Kreekor Karageuzian and senior Devyn Benson put the Brewers back in front 27-24.
- Karageuzian's jumper with 22 seconds left in the first half gave VC its largest lead at 33-28 before a Lorenzo Rappa lay-in before the horn cut the lead to three heading into halftime.
- Vassar finished the first half shooting 38.7-percent overall while going just 3-for-14 from the three-point stripe.
- Clarkson ended the opening 20 minutes going 46.2-percent from the field along with connecting on 6-for-14 from three-point range.
Second Half
- The Golden Knights reeled off a 9-4 run to begin the second half as a DeRegis three-pointer put Clarkson ahead 39-37 at the 16:54 mark.
- Vassar battled back and extended its advantage to eight points on a three-pointer from sophomore Avery Lee with 13:08 remaining in the second stanza.
- A triple from Dalgety and a free throw from Finn Cork cut the Vassar lead to four at 56-52 until back-to-back buckets from Denham and sophomore Shea Fitzgerald pushed VC back ahead by eight with 7:35 left in regulation.
- Seven straight points from Clarkson axed the advantage down to 60-59 with just over six minutes to play before a tip-in from Denham and a triple from Fitzgerald gave Vassar a six point edge.
- Two free throws from L. Rappa got the Golden Knights back within one possession at 67-65 with 3:07 left.
- Vassar used five points from Lee and a thunderous dunk from Denham to go ahead by nine with 1:13 remaining in the second half.
- Clarkson could only get as close as six in the final minute as the Brewers extended the winning streak to three straight games.
- VC shot a blistering 58.1-percent from the field in the second half and knocked down 5-of-10 from beyond three-point territory.
- The Golden Knights closed the second half shooting 48.4-percent overall while making 5-for-12 from the three-point line.
For The Brewers
- Denham tallied a team-high 16 points, nine rebounds, four steals and a block while Lee added 14 points and four assists.
- Fitzgerald recorded 11 points and four boards along with Adams tallying 11 points, three assists and four rebounds off the bench.
- Karageuzian chipped in eight points and two assists while Medina supplied six points, four assists and three boards.
For The Golden Knights
- Dalgety recorded a game-high 19 points, six rebounds and two blocks while DeRegis matched the 19 points and added two assists.
- Burns finished with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals along with L. Rappa tallying nine points and four assists.
- Cork added five points and nine rebounds while Ben Rappa added two steals and two points.
Game Statistics
- Vassar closed the contest shooting 48.4-percent overall while making 8-for-24 from three and 8-for-11 from the free throw line.
- Clarkson ended the game shooting 47.4-percent from the field and connecting on 11-for-26 from three and 5-for-6 from the free throw stripe.
- VC held a strong edge in second chance points at 16-7 while having a 21-15 advantage in points off turnovers and 32-28 in points in the paint.
